American actor and model Christian Haren was BOTD in 1935. Born and raised in San Bernadino County, California, he served in the Army during the 1950s. Lured to Hollywood, he signed a contract with MGM in the 1960s, appearing in the films Bells Are Ringing, In Harm’s Way and Billy Rose’s Jumbo. He also starred on Broadway in The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, directed by Tony Richardson. He is best known for appearing in advertisements as the Malboro Man, embodying an archetype of rugged American heterosexuality. In reality, he was a card-carrying homosexual who ran a gay bar in Palm Springs, and pointedly caricatured in Larry Kramer‘s 1978 novel Faggots. Diagnosed with AIDS in 1985, Haren became active in AIDS prevention and safe sex education campaigns. He died in 1996, aged 61. His life was the subject of Nancy D. Kates’ 1998 documentary Castro Cowboy.
