American singer-songwriter and actor Paul Jabara was BOTD in 1948. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he became a child actor and model. He joined the original 1968 Broadway cast of Hair, and played King Herod in the London premiere of Jesus Christ Superstar. (When British Actor’s Equity denied him the role in Norman Jewison’s 1973 film of Superstar, Jabara chained himself to 10 Downing Street in protest). He then replaced Tim Curry as Frank N’ Furter in the Los Angeles production of The Rocky Horror Show while Curry made the film version, and had brief roles in John Schlesinger’s films Midnight Cowboy and The Day of the Locust. Cast in 1978 disco film Thank God It’s Friday, he wrote the song Last Dance which became a hit for Donna Summer, winning him Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy awards. He eventually gave up acting to concentrate on music, writing No More Tears (Enough Is Enough), recorded by Summer with Barbra Streisand, No Jinx for Bette Midler, Work That Body for Diana Ross and It’s Raining Men for The Weather Girls. He released his own albums with considerably less success. He died in 1992 of complications from AIDS, aged 44.
