Australian researcher, educator and activist David Stuart was BOTD in 1967. Born in Adelaide, he moved to London in his 20s, immersing himself in the gay scene and developing a drug addiction. After being arrested for drug dealing and narrowly avoiding a jail sentence, he sought treatment for his addiction, and began volunteering at the LGBTQ charity London Friend. In 2014, he was appointed the first Substance Use Lead at 56 Dean Street, a pioneering healthcare service offering free support and counselling to London’s LGBTQ community. He undertook research into drug use within the gay community, leading counselling programmes to provide support and harm reduction to drug users. He is credited with coining the term “chemsex” to describe the use of drugs to enhance sexual experience. A prominent advocate, he advised governments and healthcare providers on strategies for managing drug use and high-risk sexual practices and reducing HIV transmission. He featured prominently in the 2015 documentary Chemsex, discussing the links between social stigma, internalised shame and drug use in LGBTQ communities. He died in 2022, aged 54.
