American actress and singer Ariana de Bose was BOTD in 1991. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, she trained as a dancer, competing in the TV talent series So You Think You Can Dance in 2009. She appeared on the soap opera One Life to Live before relocating to New York, where she understudied in a number of Broadway musicals. She was a cast member in the original 2015 off-Broadway production of Hamilton, following the show to its stratospherically successful Broadway run. In 2017, she starred as Donna Summer in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, reprising the role on Broadway and earning a Tony nomination. In 2021, she played Anita in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 remake of West Side Story, for which she won an Oscar and numerous industry awards. In her Oscar speech, she made reference to her identity as a queer woman of colour. She made a splash as the host of the 75th Tony Award ceremony in 2022; her subsequent film appearances have been less successful, including the box-office bombs Argylle and Kraven the Hunter. She is in a relationship with costume designer Sue Makkoo.
