American photographer Francesco Scavullo was BOTD in 1921. Born in Staten Island in New York City, he was a self-taught photographer, working briefly for Vogue before moving into fashion photography. In 1948, he worked for Seventeen and Cosmopolitan magazines, creating glossy celebrity portraits of Catherine Deneuve, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Liza Minnelli and Farrah Fawcett. Some of his more controversial work included a centrefold of a nude Burt Reynolds, and highly sexualised photographs of a young Brooke Shields. He also befriended the young supermodel Gia Carangi, whose career he was largely responsible for launching (and whom he supported during her heroin addiction and HIV-related illnesses). His other work includes the perm-alicious portrait of Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson for the 1976 film A Star Is Born, photographing Julie Andrews in man-drag for Victor/Victoria, and album covers for rock bands KISS and Duran Duran. Scavullo married model Carol McCallson in 1952, divorcing three years later. He lived and worked for over 30 years with his assistant Sean Byrne, working together to choose models, select their provocative clothes and supervise their hair styles and makeup, a process referred to as ‘’Scavullo-ization.” He died in 2004, aged 82.
