American actor and screenwriter Murray Salem was BOTD in 1950. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he showed an early interest in theatre, becoming involved in high school theatre productions. He studied at Miami University Ohio before moving to England to train at the Drama Studio London. After graduation, he performed with the experimental theatre troupe the Glasgow Citizen’s Theatre, winning critical praise for his portrayal of Eva Perón (described by one reviewer as “a large and graceful man who, astonishingly, emits both the sultry masculinity of a Joe Dallesandro and the petulant transvestism of another Warhol star, Holly Woodlawn“). In 1975, he returned to London to join the New Shakespeare Company, appearing in productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Othello, and Love’s Labour Lost. He rose to wider public attention playing Simon the Zealot in Franco Zeffirelli‘s acclaimed 1977 mini-series Jesus of Nazareth, followed by a small role in the Emmy-winning series Holocaust. He is best known for his screenplay for the 1990 comedy film Kindergarten Cop, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Openly gay since forever, he was diagnosed HIV positive in 1984, becoming involved in community support groups for people living with HIV. He died in 1998 of an AIDS-related illness, aged 47.
