New Zealand sportsman Campbell Johnstone was BOTD in 1980. Born in Waipukerau, he attended a private boys school in Hastings and studied agriculture at Lincoln University in Christchurch. He became a professional rugby in his teens, playing for the Canterbury Rugby Club and the Crusaders. In 2005, he joined the All Blacks, New Zealand’s national men’s rugby team, and played three test matches. Almost 20 years later, he came out in a television interview in 2023, becoming the first (and to date, the only) All Black to publicly identify as gay. He married his long-term partner Ben Thomson in 2024 and lives in Napier, where he works as a property valuer.
