Canadian filmmaker Jeremy Podeswa was BOTD in 1962. Born in Toronto, he studied filmmaking at Ryerson University and the American Film Institute. His queer-themed first short film, David Roche Talks to You About Love, was financed with student loans, and he became affiliated with the Toronto New Wave movement. His debut feature film Eclipse was released in 1994, followed by The Five Senses (winning a Genie award for Best Director) and Fugitive Pieces, an adaptation of Anne Michaels’ World War Two-themed novel. In the 2000s, he moved into television, directing episodes of Queer as Folk, Six Feet Under, Carnivale, Nip/Tuck, The L Word, Rome, Boardwalk Empire, True Blood, American Horror Story and The Handmaid’s Tale. He achieved commercial success directing six episodes of the fantasy series Game of Thrones. His recent work includes Station Eleven, a presciently-timed TV drama series about survivors in the wake of a global flu pandemic; The New Look, a drama about the wartime activities of Coco Chanel; and the apocalyptic science-fiction series 3 Body Problem. Podeswa lives in Los Angeles with his boyfriend.
